Bio – Dawn Shumaker Smith held a contracted position with Vocational Rehabilitation as a Native American Vocational Rehabilitation technician from 1991-1994 and began working with the Department of Children & Families in 1994 with the Economic Services Division in Adult Medicaid and remained in that position until 1998.  Dawn graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Criminal Justice from Troy State University in 1998 and accepted a position in Adult Protective Services as an Investigator.

Dawn had worked in a few positions in Adult Protective Services, including Revenue Management & Quality Assurance in Tallahassee. Once grandchildren began to arrive in Pensacola, Dawn returned to Pensacola as an Investigator, providing direct services to vulnerable adults again. In 2007, she became the supervisor of Escambia Adult Investigations for 6 investigators and a screener.

Dawn often says she wishes that Abuse of Vulnerable Adults would decrease to the point it puts her out of a job! Assisting in engaging families, corralling community resources, tapping into non-traditional resources, and bridging gaps are her own special projects to assist Florida’s most vulnerable citizens!

TLC is a 24-hour a day, 365 days a year PRN agency, which does require employees to work weekends and holidays on a rotational basis. However, employees are also given the flexibility to set their own schedules and work as often as they choose.

The application process for TLC Caregivers is a four-step process, as outlined below:

Step 1: Initial Online Application or pick up application at TLC Caregivers Office at 4400 Bayou Blvd, Suite 9 in Pensacola.

Step 2: Affidavit Completion

Step 3: Interview

Step 4: Extensive Background Check and Drug Testing

Caregiver Position

The Caregiver role exists to provide direct care to the clients of TLC Caregivers, including private clients, clients through contracts with home and community-based programs, and developmental services. They encourage independence and community involvement and promote the well-being of the clients in a safe environment.

Beth Follmar is the Director of HR at TLC Caregivers. She handles all hiring of employees and Workers Compensation, Insurance and Unemployment Compensation claims, training and all employee related issues for the company. She grew up in Pennsylvania and spent 17 years working for the PA Unemployment Compensation Bureau in the Department of Labor and Industry. She worked her way up from Claims Interviewer, to Claims Examiner and finally Supervisor before deciding to make a change and move south for better weather. She moved to Pensacola in January of 2016 to start a new adventure in the caregiving industry and came on board with TLC Caregivers at that time.

Trudy O’Brien, Assistant to the President/CEO, employed with “Capstone” for 14 years.  Duties include assisting President/CEO with oversight and management of the organization’s 5 group homes, 2 public charter schools, high school transition program, adult day training program, child care center, and 2 children’s therapy clinics and all associated services for infants through adults with and without developmental disabilities.  Employed by United Way of Escambia County for nearly 12 years as Communications Manager before moving to Capstone.  Lived in the area of nearly 28 years.  Previous employment: Savan Advertising in St. Louis, TV stations in Cape Girardeau and Joplin, Missouri, and radio station in Joplin.  Married to Bob O’Brien, two children, five grandchildren, one dog, and three cats.

Charles Thomas LETS TALK AUGUST 10th

Charles Thomas, Vice President of Children’s Programs, has served within the Escambia County School District for 35 years as teacher, principal, and administrator.  His last position with the school district was Director of Alternative Education.  In 2004, Charles joined Capstone as principal of the newly opened Capstone Academy.  The past 12 years, he has served as principal/consultant for Capstone Academy and its children’s programs.  In 2016, Charles accepted the position of Vice President of Children’s Programs for Capstone.  He is responsible for all educational and therapeutic services for infants, children, and youth with and without disabilities.  He is a graduate of the University of West Florida with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Master’s degree in Educational Leadership.  Charles and his wife, Sue, have two children, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

 

Mission:  Capstone is committed to advancing the independence for children and adults with a spectrum of abilities and disabilities.

Vision:  Capstone’s vision is to be the premier provider of services to a spectrum of children and adults with all types of abilities and disabilities in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.

The Gulf Coast RAM Clinic is a group of volunteers (medical, technical, and support) that will provide medical, dental, and/or vision services as well as preventative care and health education to those served via a fully operational mobile clinic with all necessary equipment!  Florida licensed doctors, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, dentists, dental assistants and hygienists, ophthalmologists, optometrists, opticians, paramedics, EMTs, non-medical support personnel, etc. are needed along with numerous other non-medical and support volunteers!   The only thing that volunteers need to bring is their service and experience.  All supplies and medical equipment is provided (dentist might want to bring their favorite head light).  We hope you will consider volunteering for this December 3rd & 4th, 2016 event to benefit hundreds, hopefully exceeding 1000 in our community!

2.       CDC today issued updated Zika guidance and information for healthcare providers caring for pregnant women with possible exposure to Zika virus, and updated interim guidance for the prevention of sexually-transmitted Zika virus.

3.      On July 21-22, Dr. McCabe attended a national meeting on clinical evaluation and management of infants with congenital Zika virus infection sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics at CDC.

4.      No further news from the Florida Department of Health on the investigations of two possible cases of local mosquito-borne Zika transmission there.
